How to use sealing wax
Tips and tricks to create the perfect wax seal!
Wax sealing directly onto products can be difficult and may cause problems such as;
- Wax spillage – Extra wax where you do not want it
- Wax seepage – Wax seeping through paper products
Well, here is the insider way to create your own wax seals using a stamp that we’ve created especially for you. Our suggestion is to create your very own glue-able wax seals, these can then be glued down or adhered with double sided adhesive discs which can be purchased from HERE
What you will need to make perfect wax seals...
- Some form of metal dish and a means to heat it up to keep your wax in its liquid state (melting pots available for purchase HERE)
- A flexible baking mat made from silicon or baking paper (available HERE)
- A small metal measuring spoon (Available HERE)
- A roll of kitchen towel
- A small bottle of white spirits
- Cleaning rags
Preparation
Firstly, put your wax seal into a freezer for a minimum of 30 minutes before you intend to start creating your wax impressions, ensure that you have a ready supply of ice and a container to put it in while you are working.
Lie the baking mat on a firm work surface and place some kitchen towel to the side. Next, take your stamp out of the freezer and place it in the container with the ice.
Lastly, place your wax in the metal bowl/ melting pot and allow it to melt. (We strongly recommend a means of controlling the temperature of the heat applied to avoid any risk of fire)
Method
Using your metal spoon, take a spoonful of liquid hot wax and pour a blob onto the baking mat. Put the spoon back into the hot wax to ensure it stays warm enough to avoid sticking.
Take the stamp out of the ice and dab onto the kitchen roll to ensure any water residue is removed. Place the stamp onto the wax blob, no real pressure is needed for this as the stamp is usually heavy enough to create it’s own impression.
After a few seconds, the stamp can be removed and placed back into the ice container, this is to ensure the stamp stays cold enough for the wax not to stick to it.
Finished product
You have now created your first stickable wax impression. Using this method means that if you do make any mistakes, you can easily let the wax dry, peel the seal from the baking mat and place it back in the melting pot to try again.

Accidents and remedies
Occasionally wax can stick to the stamp, blocking up the engraving and preventing you from creating more impressions. The easiest way to clear this is to pour out another blob of wax onto the baking mat and place the stamp in this to draw out the dried wax. Wait a few seconds for the wax to harden again and remove.
Alternatively, if this does not work, you can remove the engraved stamp end from the handle and soak in white spirits overnight, to soften the wax.
WHITE SPIRIT IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE, GREAT CAUTION SHOULD BE USED WHEN COMBINING ANY FORM OF HEAT AND A FLAMMABLE LIQUID TOGETHER.
